Things Get Painted - Dropzone Commander Shaltari Braves

Image
So let's jump in the deep end here! I haven't done something this in depth before. A few posts ago I did an unboxing on the Shaltari Tribes force I had. This time, I'm painting them, and everyone gets to go along for the ride! As we go, I'm going to show you what paints I used, and discuss how I painted them from the start to end. You'll also get to see me get close to finishing, and then change my mind. This happens when I don't plan out everything exactly as I want it, but it's a learning curve. I was going to work around it, but figured I'd include it as well. So here we go! These are the Shaltari Braves. They come on giant chunky sprues and also have some thin resin bases to plug into. The bases need to have a tab trimmed and filed from the bottom so that they sit flat. The models themselves are quite easy to clean while on the frames. I left them on while I did that, as they are easier to handle, and then brushed them with a wire brush

Things Get Opened - Dystopian Wars Covenant of Antarctica Naval Battle Group

Image
Ladies and gentlemen, let me tell you a fantastic tale of victory. That tale is this: A few weeks ago, I finished painting not just three Tribal Class Cruisers for a Kingdom of Britannia force I want to build in the far, far future, but I finished painting all the Dystopian Wars miniatures I own! Huzzah! It's not often I get a chance to one up a game system by painting all the models I own for it! Here are some photos to celebrate the happy occasion:

Things Get Opened - Dropzone Commander Shaltari Tribes

Image
Greetings all! I've returned, with many great ideas for blog articles! Many of these will be discarded as I approach certain times because, lets face it, I'm lazy :D So, first of all, sorry for the lack of posts. With work, GD, and other things going on, I barely got a chance to check my emails some days, and I'm only now getting a handle on things. So this is going to be a quick Things Get Opened post on this shiny new device:  (And I'll apologise now for the shift in camera settings. I forgot to change them at one point...)

Judged and found wanting...

Image
There are very few things about my hobby I dislike, and last night, three of them happened, all related... 1) Miniatures falling apart 2) Not being prepared 3) Having to scrape black paint off my fingernails at work the following morning, looking like I had a late night at a goth club As some of you might know (From things like Twitter, not from this now rarely-updated blog), I've got myself involved in a Malifaux Slow Grow to try and clear out some models I have had backlogged for a while.

Random Thoughts 12 - Preventing shaking hands

Image
OK, I went away for six weeks, and Blogger changes its layout... Not weird at all... Anyway, I need to get some new photos up soon (The reason there have been a lack of posts is I was focused too much on painting). However, I thought I would share this video which I found via Twitter earlier this week by ichibanpainting. My hands shake normally, but thisreally helps cut down the shaking I have found: The only thing I would suggest that you use wide rubber bands. The wider it is, the more spread out the pressure on your wrists and fingers is. I used some thin rubber bands I had on hand, and after about 50 minutes, they had left purple bruises around my hands, and had dug into them. Going to a wider band didn't remove the problem, but did make it a lot less obvious, and it cleared up quicker. I'll get some photos up in the next few days. If you are interested in more of ichibanpainting's videos, they can be found here: IchibanPainting

Things Get Painted - Helms Deep Eowyn

Image
OK, after posting nothing for the past few weeks, I've got a chance to take some photos of recent painted stuff, so that should be due in the next few posts. First up is the Helms Deep Eowyn I entered into Golden Demon last year. I was lucky enough to get a gold for her. I have the painting steps, but will put them up at an undetermined point in the future with the WIP photos I have. Meanwhile, enjoy the pictures. Also, if you want to vote on CMON, the link is here .

Things Get Opened - GW Battle of Five Armies

Image
In case you haven't guessed it by now, I'm a nerd. Two of the things I enjoy nerding out about are miniatures and The Lord of the Rings / The Hobbit. Therefore GW can sucker me in to a third of their range by generally shaking a blister pack at me (Store managers have tested this theory and it works...). A few weeks ago, in an attempt to get a few LOTR models I have had my eye on for a while before they ended up going to Finecast, I ordered some things, and while I was at it, got The Battle of Five Armies.

Random Thoughts 11 - Malifaux Pandora box review

I did a review of the Pandora starter box for Malifaux for the Aetherworks website, and they are currently using it! If you'd like to have a look, the review is located at: Aetherworks - Pandora Legion of Sorrows review

Random Thoughts 10 - "Dear GW" - Finecast

***I'm going to say that this isn't really an open letter to GW or something of the sort, but we trying to figure out why GW have gone down the path they have with the Finecast models. A bit of a weird exercise, but it was a lot easier to put these thoughts in order as if addressing GW themselves. Also, sorry for two Random Thought posts in a row after the lack of blog entries. I'll have a few new model related things soon. I just need to take the time to do the photos. *** Dear Games Workshop, I'm going to start this by saying that I am going to make an effort. The effort is that I won't end up whining about completely useless topics, such as why army X hasn't had a new release in Y years, why I think dropping paint colour Z was the biggest marketing mistake you ever made, or why race S shouldn't have been written out of 40K by having race T eat them (OK, maybe that last one isn't too obscured). I'm going to make an effort to say my piece about

Random Thoughts 9 - BBC News - Why are adults still launching tabletop war?

Yes, I'm running late with posts, so this is going to be a quick one, and another write-up (all text sorry) will get put up tomorrow afternoon... Anyway, this went up on the BBC website a few days ago. I know I'm late posting it, but I'll put it up anyway for those who didn't see it at first. It's interesting to see the number of comments in the article, as well as the quantity of those where there is a very positive vibe coming from the posters. Things Get Painted - Aetherworks Houses

Image
I've been slack, and have been trying to get a blog post ready for Thursday last week when I wanted it to go up, but instead have been dragging my feet. So here is a late post, and hopefully after this I will be back on target. Aetherworks! I've done a WIP on one of their houses in the past, and will be finishing it in the future (I have to do some modifications to it first, hehehe). However there were a few still floating around here, and they all seemed to be in a half-finished state. After painting one at Cancon, and seeing the display Andrew and Rob did, I wanted to try to finish some of mine off. So here they are: Arcane Supplies: The main work on this was done by Andrew, so all I did was paint the roof and sign on this one. Seamstress (Hem hem): The Seamstress was done up with corrugated cardboard to look like corrugated metal roofing. The Arcane supply roof was painted black, drybrushed silver, then had rust applied. This one though had the roof painted orange/brown, dry

Things Get Opened - Wyrd Nightmare Lord Chompy Bits

Image
OK, clearly I'm running out of things to do, as I'm doing an unboxing of a model everyone saw over a year ago on every other blog. But that won't stop me! Because, to some extent, I'm lazy... So, on to the opening! NIGHTMARE LORD CHOMPY BITS! I was lucky enough to get him during the Black Friday sale they had, and even though I forked out $100 for him (Well, I think slightly less due to the exchange rate), I think he's worth every penny. The fun thing with this is the weight. That box is the standard 'big creature' box from Wyrd, and it's full of metal. It's capable of being used to kill someone. Seriously. Don't throw it to people. You'll do them a damage. In the box! That bag on the left is Lord Chompy. All of him. In bits. In a bag (Yeah, I think the 'kill people' reference is coming back again...). Also in there are the two Dreamer models, their bases, and the cards for use in the game. The cards! These are the standard card for L

Things get Painted - Wyrd Poltergeist

Image
OK, I'm running a bit late on this one, so I have to be quick... TaDa! This is the Poltergeist I painted ages ago! The colour scheme was done with an eye towards matching the Sorrows I did ages ago. I also tried out at a friends suggestion the idea of doing hair like fire, which works in well with the spirit side of the model I think. Anyway! Pictures! CMON Link for anyone interested: Wyrd Poltergeist by Turelio Currently sitting on: As for the paint scheme: White Undercoat Body (Airbrushed same colours as the Sorrows) H: Sunburst Yellow and Rotting Flesh (1:1) H: Rotting Flesh and Skull White (1:1) H: Skull White S: Orkhide Shade : Charadon Granite : Hawk Turquoise (1:1:1) Eyes Base: Hawk Turquoise H: Skull White added for highlights H: Skull White Tongue Base: Tallern Flesh Wash: Scab Red H: Tallarn Flesh H: Tallarn Flesh and Skull White (1:1) Claws Base: Astronomican Grey Wash: Devaln Mud H: Skull White Purple: Base: Dheneb Stone: Liche Purple (3:1) S: Dheneb Stone and Liche Pur

Random Thought 8 - IAMA former Games Workshop employee. AMA.

I thought I would link to this article on Reddit. It's pretty long, but gives some insight into a few of GW's decisions which have seemed weird to fans in the past. IAMA former Games Workshop employee. AMA.

Things Get Painted - Wyrd Zombie Chihuahua

Image
I finally got pictures ready to post! Isn't it amazing! This is the Zombie Chihuahua from Wyrd. I don't play a McMourning crew, and this one is a Totem that can only be attached to him, but either way, I still wanted to paint it. He's a bit strange in that he (Yes, it is a boy, there is a precise level of detail on these models...) is so small some details are hard to make out of the texture is skin or fur. So I chose in the end to do him with a lot of exposed skin, and went from there! If anyone is interested in voting on CMON though, his link is here. Currently he is sitting on And as for the paint scheme: White Undercoat Flesh - Airbrush Base: P3 Bastion Grey H: P3 Cryx Bane Highlight H: P3 Midlund Flesh H: P3 Midlund Flesh and Skull White (1:1) H: Skull White Flesh - Brush Wash: Midlund Flesh S: P3 Cryx Bane Highlight H: Skull White and Midlund Flesh (3:1) Glaze: Warlock Purple Glaze: Liche Purple Hair Base: Charadon Granite H: Calthan Brown H: Khemri Brown H: Khemri Br

Random Thoughts 7 - Thanks Colonel Shofer!

A friend pointed out to me today that he was looking through Colonel Shofer's blog, and noticed that he had linked to the Puppet Wars Multiplayer opening I posted yesterday! I just wanted to say a quick thanks to Colonel Shofer, and also welcome to anyone who has found this blog through his blog! If you'd like to look at his blog, it is located HERE!

Things Get Opened - Puppet Wars Multiplayer Expansion

Image
Hooray! I'm back! Better late than never and so on... This is a quick rundown of opening the multiplayer expansion for Puppet Wars. What it offers is a way to go from the two players in the main game to four, or alternatively gives you two alternate masters, and a few extra sidekicks to expand your toybox. It also provides some more counters so that should you have four people playing, you have enough counters in different colours in order to differentiate the four players workbenches ingame. This is the way I glamorously unbox items... The back it similarly packed to a Malifaux crew box. So you get models, cards, counters, bases, and foam. Bases. See them? Good. That's the least interesting thing aside from the foam in the box, so let's move on... The minis! This box has two new masters (Pandora and Marcus), as well as four new sidekicks (Joss, Kade, Sebastian and Nino). So it's a boost for the four 'suited' factions, as well as providing masters to use for the

Things Get Opened - Puppet Wars

Image
Better late than never! I picked up Puppet Wars and the multiplayer expansion just before the end of the year, and took some unboxing photos when I first opened it up. For now, I'm going to go through the main box, and I'll do an opening of the multiplayer expansion later on... This is the main box. Everyone drooled over the images when they were firs released, so I'm not going to go into too much detail on it. Opening up the box, it's pretty well arranged, the rulebook and pattern book are on top of the board, which covers up the rest of the things that go with the game. The rulebook and pattern book. One thing I would point out is that while it may make sense to read the rulebook and then the pattern book, in this case it is probably better to read the pattern book and then the rulebook. The rulebook goes through all the main rules, but the pattern book has a few introductory games that build on the rules slowly, so it does explain the game in a few easy games that sl
